International Relations: Strengthening Global Cooperative Ties
The National Labour Cooperatives Federation of India Ltd. (NLCF) is committed to fostering international cooperation and promoting the global cooperative movement. As a proud member of the International Cooperative Alliance (ICA), NLCF actively participates in global dialogues, conferences, and meetings to build stronger relationships with international cooperatives and stakeholders.
In December 2011, the Managing Director of NLCF represented the federation at the International Conference titled "The Positive Competition: The Cooperative Enterprises Between Market Regulations and Solidarity", held in Palazzo Dei Congressi, Italy. This important event was organized by CMC di Ravenna, a well-established cooperative from Italy. The conference addressed critical issues surrounding market regulations and the solidarity-driven principles of cooperatives, providing a platform for meaningful exchanges of ideas between cooperative leaders and policymakers.
In addition to representing NLCF at international conferences, the Federation remains committed to building and nurturing strong, lasting relationships with cooperatives around the world. Through the hosting of foreign delegations visiting the NLCF Secretariat, we aim to share knowledge, strengthen bilateral ties, and foster collaborative efforts that drive the cooperative movement forward. These interactions are vital for exchanging best practices, learning from diverse cooperative models, and enhancing the global cooperative network.
As part of our active involvement in the international cooperative community, representatives from NLCF also attend the General Assembly of ICA. NLCF has had the privilege of attending meetings in various international locations, including Mexico, Japan, and China. These assemblies provide valuable opportunities for networking, policy advocacy, and strategic collaborations that contribute to the growth and success of cooperatives worldwide.
Through these engagements, NLCF aims to create a more inclusive and globally connected cooperative sector, where knowledge sharing and mutual support across borders will continue to promote the values of solidarity, democracy, and economic justice. NLCF's participation in global cooperative events not only strengthens its own initiatives but also ensures that the voice of Indian labor cooperatives is heard on the world stage.

- Promotion and Organization of Labor Cooperatives
- Establish and support labor cooperatives, including district and state-level unions/federations.
- Enhancing Economic Interests
- Advocate for the economic welfare of members and affiliated societies by securing work from awarding agencies and ensuring its execution through labor cooperatives.
- Strive to improve the financial condition of NLCF and provide consistent work for member cooperatives year-round.
- Development of Infrastructure and Industries
- Establish industries, plants, and kilns in collaboration with other cooperatives to manufacture construction materials and related products.
- Provide facilities that aid the functioning of member cooperatives and improve their overall operational capabilities.
- Marketing and Distribution Support
- Facilitate marketing, procurement, storage, and distribution of materials required by or manufactured by member societies and affiliated units.
- Resource Management and Supply
- Lease or operate mineral mines for the production and supply of construction materials and related industries.
- Provide tools, machinery, and equipment to members on a hire-purchase or leasing basis.
- Technological Advancement
- Establish a technical wing to provide relevant know-how and technology to affiliated societies, helping them improve productivity and innovation.
- Advocacy and Representation
- Represent the labor cooperative movement at national and international levels, advocating for policies that benefit the labor cooperative sector.
- Education and Awareness
- Promote the labor cooperative program through educational initiatives, training, and workshops to empower laborers and strengthen the sector.
- Organize seminars, conferences, exhibitions, and publishing literature to educate stakeholders and enhance cooperative awareness.
- Research and Development
- Conduct research on the economic, social, and developmental aspects of labor cooperatives to foster innovation and growth in the sector.
- Employment and Welfare Initiatives
- Address unemployment and underemployment, especially among forest dwellers and marginalized labor groups.
- Execute social welfare programs for women, children, and bonded laborers.
- Infrastructure for Training and Skill Development
- Establish training centers and facilities for unskilled workers in construction and allied sectors, with accommodation options if necessary.
- Export and International Cooperation
- Undertake the export of labor and manage associated responsibilities as an authorized agency for the Ministry of Labor.
- Execution of Government Projects
- Participate in and execute various government projects aimed at improving social services for both members and non-members.
- Financial Services
- Function as a financial institution to provide loans and financial assistance to affiliated organizations through collaboration with financial institutions and banks.
- Security Services and Labor Supply
- Provide security services and supply skilled and unskilled labor to cooperatives and other organizations in need.
Through these objectives, NLCF aims to create a robust and sustainable labor cooperative ecosystem, enhancing the socio-economic conditions of workers across India.
